Years Playing: I've been into music since I was ten years old. I played saxophone for nine years but it was something else that caught my ears in my youth. It was when I saw Harry Belafonte's cult classic "Best Street" that the world of DJ culture grabbed me. Although I wanted to learn at that point I had to wait until I was 19 to get my first set of turntables...a used pair of Technics 100s and a small Gemini mixer that I still have today as a keepsake. I've been spinning records since the rave explosion of 1992 and I will never stop.
Influences: There is no one single influence on my skills and technique. It's all a mish-mash of borrowed vibes from all the DJs and musical acts I have come across over the years. My initial influences were Julian "Jumpin" Perez and Bad Boy Bill. Those two showed me how important it is to rock a room and keep it jumping. My mentor DJ Ernie Perez showed me how important it is to have the skill of solid blending in being a DJ. My brother showed me how I need to venture beyond what the radio DJs play and find my own sound. Other DJs I have gained inspiration from include Derrick Carter Charles Feelgood Derrick May Ferry Corsten Mili Sefic and Mazi. One of my most important influences is the duo known as Orbital. When I saw them in concert I was mesmorized at how they worked the crowd and fed off their energy. The headlights I wear is a tribute to them.
Style: I am NOT the kind of DJ who will happily just pick one style of music and blindly play it because it's the "hot trend" or because of ideas that I have to be "categorized". I'm also not the kind the DJ who will just play the hits. That's the easy way and the scene does not grow on only the radio hits. As a club and event DJ it is my duty to the scene to educate it while entertaining it. There is way too much music out there to just settle on one sound. I play deep house prog techno trance and old school. I also dabble with breaks and electro. |
